Sunday in the Mountains: The New Ski Sunday

Ski Sunday may be gone from the BBC, but the passion for winter sports is far from over. Created by Wavelength and Extreme International, Sunday in the Mountains is a new weekly winter sports show bringing world-leading snow competitions, legendary Alpine destinations and mountain adventure to audiences across YouTube, TV, streaming and social media from January 2027.

Why Now

Ski Sunday first aired on the BBC in 1978 and its last episode was broadcast on 1 February 2026. In September 2026 the BBC confirmed the programme would not return, and nearly 30,000 people have since signed a petition calling to Save Ski Sunday.

The programme has ended. The stories haven't. The athletes haven't. The mountains haven't. And the audience hasn't.

  • 4.5M: peak audience for Ski Sunday.
  • Nearly 30,000: people have signed the petition to Save Ski Sunday.
  • 1M+: Britons ski every year, with 3M more calling themselves skiers.
  • 85%: of UK 18 to 24 year olds are interested in trying a snowsports holiday.

The Show

Created by Wavelength and Extreme International, Sunday in the Mountains (working title) is a new multi-platform winter sports and mountain lifestyle show. It combines the thrill of ski racing and freestyle competitions with the adventure, culture and characters that make mountain life so compelling, built to appeal to lifelong ski and snowboard fans while introducing a new generation to the world of the mountains.

In a nod to its heritage, Wavelength has secured the rights to the Ski Sunday theme tune, Pop Looks Bach. Composed by Sam Fonteyn in 1970, it was the theme to Ski Sunday from 1978 to 2026 and now opens a new era of winter sports broadcasting.

Each week the show travels to one of the world's great ski resorts, bringing together:

  • The theme tune: Pop Looks Bach, the music viewers know from Ski Sunday.
  • Competitions and resort events: ski racing and freestyle highlights in the Ski Sunday tradition, with behind-the-scenes access and exclusive features.
  • World-class riding: the best skiing and snowboarding on the world's great mountains.
  • Guest talent: athletes, presenters and creators bring audiences closer to the action, on and off the slopes.
  • Adventure travel: ski resorts and mountain destinations, with insider tips.
  • Mountain lifestyle: local culture, food, après-ski and stories from mountain communities around the world.
  • Fitness and wellbeing: training, health and wellbeing stories from the mountains.
  • Taste of the Mountains: chefs, mountain huts and local dishes from the world's great ski resorts.
  • For every viewer: inspiring for newcomers and entertaining for lifelong fans.

The Spirit of Ski Sunday Lives On

“The TV industry is lamenting the death of broadcast TV but the future of media is repeatable social formats. Ski Sunday didn't need fixing, it just needed to adapt and move to where the audience has shifted to.”

“The reaction to Ski Sunday’s cancellation shows just how much the programme means to people. We want to build on that passion, inspire the next generation of winter sports fans and support the growth of the snowsports industry.”

“This is about bringing together the drama of competition, the magic of the mountains and the people who make this world so special. By taking the format beyond traditional television, we have an opportunity to build a truly global community around it.”

Alistair Gosling, Founder and CEO of Wavelength
